The correlation between crime and guns is significant; but, not for the reasons many people would suspect. The media would have us believe that banning guns is the surest way to prevent violent crime. On the surface, the idea seems sensible: no guns, no shootings…right? No; in fact, it’s quite wrong.
Statistics are often cited showing select countries that have imposed such a ban, and the relative low violent crime rate that follows. Statistics, however, can be easily manipulated by omission. England, where gun ownership is not a right of the citizenry, is a favorite among those that employ this method. What they don’t tell you, however, is that you are more than twice as likely to be a victim of knife crime in the UK as you are to be a victim of gun crime in the US.
